I Could Fall In Love

I Could Fall In Love - The "Seductive Romantic Confessional"

I became familiar with the American singer "Selena" Quintanilla after the movie about her life was released in 1997.  I remember watching it at home and being glued to the television from beginning to end.  While watching the movie I learned that this song was the first song to crossover into the American billboard and that she sung in English.

I like this song because it is so relatable.  I believe that many of us have stumbled into relationships where we realize suddenly that there could be more, and it could be great but then you question should it be?  This song sings innocently about the first moments in love when all is new, and you are wondering what it could be.

I love how this song is described as a "seductive romantic confessional.  I would not have described it as a "seductive" until I translated the words that Selena speaks midways in the song.  "I'm always dreaming of you kissing my lips, caressing my skin, hugging me with crazy desire.  Imagining that you love me, how could I love you."

I'm always dreaming of you
Kissing my lips, caressing my skin
Hugging me with crazy desire
Imagining that you love me.
How could I love you

The movie Selena was played by entertainer JLO.  I remember learning about the controversy surrounding her playing that role which originally was supposed to go to Salma Hayek.  I became a fan of her music even though I didn't know even a little bit of Spanish.

One of my favorite songs that I discovered from the movie is "I Could Fall in Love."  This song was recorded in 1995 and finished five days before her untimely death by her fan club president Yolanda Saldivar.

The song is described as a mid-tempo, pop ballad, and R & B song with soul and soft rock influences.  It was compared to "I'm getting used to you" and "Captive Hearts."  One Vibe Magazine writer stated that the song reminded him of songs by artist Brandy Norwood and TLC.

I could lose my heart tonightIf you don't turn and walk away'Cause the way I feel I mightLose control and let you stay
'Cause I could take you in my armsAnd never let go
I could fall in love (in love) with youI could fall in love (in love) with you (baby)
I can only wonder howTouching you would make me feelBut if I take that chance right nowTomorrow will you want me still? (baby, will you want me?)
So I should keep this to myselfAnd never let you know
I could fall in love (in love) with you(I could fall in love with you)I could fall in love (in love) with you (baby)
And I know it's not rightAnd I guess I should try to do what I should doBut I could fall in love, fall in love with youI could fall in love with you
Siempre estoy soñando en tiBesando mis labios, acariciando mi pielAbrazándome con ansias locasImaginando que me amasComo yo podía amar a ti
So I should keep this to myselfAnd never let you know
I could fall in love (in love) with you(I could fall in love with you)I could fall in love (in love) with you (with you baby)
I could fall in love (fall in love)I could fall in love (fall in love)With you (you baby)
I could fall, fall in love (in love) with you (I could fall in love with you)

No Earthly Good by Candace L. Smith

No Earthly Good Available on Amazon What happens when faith no longer fits the shape you were given? When love requires boundaries? When legacy feels more dangerous than divine? No Earthly Good is a fearless, reflective exploration of belief, sacrifice, love, judgment, family, legacy, and acceptance, told through lived experience rather than doctrine. With honesty and spiritual maturity, Candace L. Smith interrogates the ideas we are taught to revere and asks what they cost us when left unexamined. This book is not a rejection of God, love, or community, it is a reckoning with how they are practiced. Through personal reflection and cultural observation, Smith challenges performative faith, unbalanced sacrifice, conditional love, and the pressure to build legacies at the expense of integrity.
